It is important that you find a shop that specializes in Volvo service, and always make sure they are using genuine Volvo parts. They should be knowledgeable on Volvo recommendations for regular maintenance and servicing, and should have the expertise needed to keep your Volvo running smoothly for hundreds of thousands of miles. The following is a general list of things you can do as an owner to insure the safety of your vehicle.
Volvo Service/Maintenance Tips:
It is always a good idea for any car owner, foreign or domestic, to keep a vehicle service and maintenance record. For resale purposes, it will increase the value of your Volvo two fold. 1. It gives potential buyers peace of mind that the car was taken care of, and 2. A well maintained ride will get you the most money back for your investment and also extend the lifetime of your vehicle.
Keep the Following Volvo Service and Maintenance Records:
-
Upon Refueling: Volvo recommends that you check the following at regular intervals when refueling: brake and washer fluid, engine oil, tire pressure, and coolant. Power steering should be checked at 5,000 miles, transmission fluids at 10,000, and spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 miles.
-
Upon Servicing: When changing your filters, the standard Volvo recommendations state that oil filters should be changed every 5,000 miles, air filters every 30,000 miles, and replacement of fuel filters should be done every 60,000 miles.
-
Upon Oil Change: It is a good idea to have your hoses inspected at every oil change, and before an extreme change in weather, have all radiator and water hoses checked for cracks, softness and swelling. This is also a good habit to get into before taking any long trips.
-
Upon Servicing or Refueling: Every 7,000 miles, you should have a good look at your belts. Make sure you check the tension, and also look over for excessive wear and tear. Loose belts or overly tightened belts can cause a gamut of problems for your engine, alternator, and power steering.
These guidelines are a good tool to use for all of your do-it-yourselfers. However, if you choose to bring your Volvo in for scheduled servicing, choose a shop that specializes in Volvo. They will keep your records and let you know when it is time for them to check under the hood.
