Jaguar has gone through a lot of changes since their first Jaguar SS 100 was introduced in 1935. After World War II, Jaguar dropped the SS, which stood for Swallow Sidecar, because it had the same connotation as the Nazi’s. Swallow Sidecar Ltd., based in England, produced a popular aluminum motorcycle sidecar, and eventually they expanded their interest into the automobile production industry in 1933. In a few short years, the Jaguar was born.
Jaguar’s real launch into American culture started in the 1960’s. Icons like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the British model Twiggy made British culture a hot commodity. And who can forget Austin Powers’ “shaguar”? This British baby is still smokin’ hot. But due to German automobile competition and adverse exchange rates, Jaguar decided to partner with Ford which led to a full buyout in 1990. Ford’s financial influences shined with the launch of Jaguar’s XK8 and the supercharged XKR sport cars in 1997. Since then another buyout occurred, and in 2008 Jaguar was sold to Indian manufacturer Tata. Working on staying true to their British charm, while moving forward with new innovative technology and design, Jaguar still has a future.
